ENCINITAS EARTH DAY CELEBRATIONS

It’s almost Earth Day Encinitas! For the past 50 years, Earth Day has been celebrated by billions of people around the globe, annually every April 22, to join together in promoting awareness for the health of our environment. Here are a few events happening in our neck of the woods and some ideas of how you can celebrate Mother Earth all year long!

LOCAL EVENTS

Arbor Day celebration: The city of Encinitas is hosting an Arbor Day event from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 22 to celebrate the city’s urban forest and the benefits it provides to the community. Volunteers are needed to help at the event, which also celebrates the city’s status as a Tree City USA community. The city will plant 50 trees at Leucadia Oaks Park, 1511 N. Vulcan Ave., and the surrounding neighborhood. Visit encinitasca.gov for more information.

Coastal Roots Farm: Celebrate the Earth and express gratitude for her ongoing generosity by giving back to the soil and trees this Earth Day! On Sunday, April 23 from 10am-2pm, Coastal Roots Farm will be hosting volunteer tasks including mulching, weeding and pruning – with opportunities to support with the staining and building of new waste receptacles and pergola roofs. Bring the fam! This is great for children over the age of 8 who are excited to volunteer on the Farm. $18/per person suggested donation. https://coastalrootsfarm.org/event/earth-day-on-the-farm/ for more information.

CELEBRATE OUR PLANET ALL YEAR LONG!

Get Kids Engaged in Nature and Science: It’s never too early to get children engaged with science and nature. With the weather warming and spring in the air, Earth Day is the perfect opportunity to get the kids in your life outside and excited about science. From making a pine cone bird feeder to looking for four-leaf clovers to creating a neighborhood plant atlas, there are tons of free ways to entertain youngsters while getting them engaged with wildlife, natural materials, and the environment around them. Check out a list of eco-tainment activities for more ideas from earthwatch.org.

Take Small Steps to Make Your Home More Sustainable: There are a number of ways you can make your house more sustainable that are good for both the environment AND your wallet. Earth Day is the perfect opportunity to commit to adopting these energy-saving habits, like using less AC, using cloth napkins, and growing your own herbs. Learn about steps you can take in this Earthwatch blog post about creating a more sustainable home.

Clean Up Your Neighborhood: Celebrate Earth Day by making the world a little bit cleaner. Grab some gloves and a trash bag and help to pick up the litter in your neighborhood. By just spending a few hours picking up the plastic littering your area, you can improve the nature around you and help keep our planet healthy. You could even try making it part of your routine—walking the dog or getting some fresh air? Bring some cleanup supplies with you and pick up any litter you see.
